Cheval Blanc 2009 is a red Bordeaux from the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé A appellation, sourced from the Château`s renowned vineyard of gravel and clay soils. The 2009 vintage was a historically warm and opulent year that produced ripe, concentrated and powerful wines. This bottling, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, presents a profound bouquet of ripe blueberries, crème de cassis and chocolate mint, with subtle notes of new leather and dried violets. The palate is elegant and full-bodied, with super fine-grained tannins and a layered, mineral-laced finish. The Salmanazar format will allow the wine`s immense concentration and structure to evolve over many decades.

Aromatically open, welcoming and nuanced, closing down slightly in the mid palate as it promises to hunker down for the long haul but already it is clear just what an exceptionally good wine this is. Tasting surprisingly nuanced and balanced next to the monumental 2010 at supper - this has more minerality and lyricism. Soft raspberry fruits and smoked liqourice that remind me of the 2006 but this is far more layered and complex and a brilliant vintage - maybe a better comparison is the 1982 about it in that it felt so approchable at first that it was almost underestimated but keeps on delivering at the top of expectations, with waves of flavours and an easy but powerful grip. 67% 1st wine. I gave this wine 100 points when I tasted it at the 10 years on mark, and I am so happy to report that it continues to delight.Jane Anson22nd September 2021

A blend of 56% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Cheval Blanc has a deep garnet-brick color. It needs a lot of shaking to wake this sleeping giant, then it roars into life with powerful crème de cassis, blackberry coulis, and fruitcake scents, leading to touches of sandalwood and dusty soil. The full-bodied palate is laden with densely packed black fruits, intertwined with mineral and exotic spice accents, supported by super-plush tannins, and finishing with epic length. The 2009 Cheval Blanc has a rambunctious nose with copious red fruit, meat juices, sage and crushed stone aromas, ineffably complex. This is so refined, constantly mutating in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannin. There is a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of cassis, cardamom and allspice. Immense depth and grip towards the finish expresses ripe Cabernet Franc. This is an outstanding 2009 destined for long-term ageing. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
