Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe, founded by Hippolyte Brunier, produced its inaugural wine in 1900. It has grown to become one of the largest landholders in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, boasting nearly 100 hectares of vineyards. The majority of their vineyards are dedicated to red grape varieties, with Grenache reigning supreme in the region. The renowned Vieux Télégraphe is their flagship wine, sourced from the La Crau vineyard, which boasts some of the oldest vines in the area. The 1996 vintage in the Rhône Valley generally fared well, resulting in several noteworthy wines from both the Northern and Southern regions.
88 Vinous
Medium red. Cherry, roasted herbs, earth, licorice and an almost exotically sweet note of marzipan on the nose. Supple in the mouth, with notes of pepper and woodsmoke. Seems fresher than the '97 Vieux Télégraphe, but this is not at all dominated by its acids. Finishes with very good length, and tongue-coating but supple tannins.Stephen Tanzer1st January 1999

A Legacy from La Crau

Perched on the famed La Crau plateau, Vieux Télégraphe has been a pillar of excellence in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for over a century. The estate’s vineyards, planted with old vines that thrive in the region’s stony soils, produce wines that are both powerful and elegant. Under the stewardship of the Brunier family, Vieux Télégraphe has maintained a commitment to traditional winemaking, allowing the terroir to shine through in every vintage.

The estate’s wines, particularly the iconic La Crau, are celebrated for their complexity, structure, and ability to age gracefully over decades. Whether you’re enjoying a young vintage or one with years of bottle age, Vieux Télégraphe’s wines offer a profound expression of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s storied terroir.
