Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 2001 is a full-bodied red wine from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the southern Rhône Valley. Domaine de Marcoux has been elevated to Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge`s very highest echelon thanks to the tireless work of sisters Sophie and Catherine Armenier. The domaine`s Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced from biodynamically farmed grapes and typically is made of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah and 3% Cinsault. "Like the traditional cuvee, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes shows a tinge of cool climate-like style and offers nuanced notes of forest floor, garrigue, damp earth, olive and ample dark fruits. While the bouquet is outstanding, the palate is straight up sensational and this beauty has full-bodied richness, a layered, expansive texture, perfectly polished tannin and a great, great finish. Dark red. Extravagant, superripe nose combines strawberry, raspberry, roasted game, gingerbread and molasses. Huge and dense, with powerful extract and compellingly sweet strawberry, raspberry and spice flavors. Full-blown Chateauneuf that almost magically maintains its freshness and balance. Like a solid on the slow-mounting, compellingly sweet aftertaste. This has blossomed spectacularly since I tasted it in barrel last November.

Tasted at the domaine out of magnum, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is just a bit past its peak to my palate, but it still remains a delicious wine. Knockout, complex aromas of black truffles, leather and black cherries emerge from the glass, while the wine remains full-bodied, supple and silky on the palate, with a tremendously long but slightly astringent finish.
