Domaine Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve is one of the true icons of the Southern Rhône, winner of frequent 100-point scores from critics, and of effusive praise from enthusiasts of full-flavoured French reds. The Daumens family has been farming the estate in the northern section of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation since the early 1900s. Winemaking is overseen by Jean-Paul Daumen who practices a low-intervention winemaking regime - no sulphur is added during vinification, and the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. The domaine`s flagship CNDP Reserve is produced from 100% Grenache from tiny-yielding centenarian vines. "1999 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve is a blockbuster in a year that did not generally produce wines of such power and richness (of course, it includes the declassified Vieilles Vignes cuvee in the blend). A deep purple colour is followed by aromas of cassis, kirsch liqueur, flowers, plums, and blackberries. Full-bodied, multi-layered, and fabulously extracted, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and magnificent purity, this is a sumptuous, prodigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape that should drink well for 15-20 years." Wine Advocate, 2001

Vinous
Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of cassis, violet pastille and mint. Dense but juicy and penetrating, with enticing flavors of black fruits, licorice and mint. Tightly wound but already quite aromatic in the middle and on the very long finish. Structured to age. Stephen Tanzer1st January 2002
