From the remarkably consistent Châteauneuf du Pape producer, Domaine La Barroche, Pure is an ultra-limited cuvée handcrafted from a single plot of century-old vines planted in the sandy soils at the junction of the “Grand Pierre”, “Rayas” and “Pointu” districts. All fruit is hand-harvested, rigorously sorted, and is fed via gravity to the underground winery to undergo a slow fermentation in tulip-shaped concrete eggs. It is then aged for 20 months in old oak foudres before being bottled unfiltered. This is an incredible wine of remarkable intensity and complexity yet seamless balance and finesse.

Glistening violet. Vibrant, spice-tinged cherry, raspberry and candied lavender scents pick up potpourri and mineral qualities with air. Densely packed red fruit liqueur, cherry cola, star anise and floral pastille flavors stain the palate and deepen steadily through the back half. Fine-grained tannins lend shape to an impressively long, focused, floral-dominated finish that echoes the red fruit note and betrays no rough edges.Josh Raynolds1st October 2021
