Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a red Rhône blend from the Southern Rhône. This 2010 magnum represents one of the most acclaimed vintages in the history of the estate, known for its incredible balance and potential for long-term cellaring. The Avril family uses a high proportion of Grenache, supplemented by Mourvèdre and Syrah, all co-fermented in large foudres. Unlike many producers in the region, they do not produce special cuvées, ensuring all the best fruit goes into this single bottling. It offers complex notes of kirsch, garrigue and fine black pepper.

The 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a serious wine. I vividly remember tasting this red for the first time at the winery shortly after release. Like it did back then, it leaves quite an impression today. The 2010 unwinds in the glass with gorgeous cherry liqueur, raspberry jam, dried lavender, tobacco, cured meat, leather and exotic spice aromas. It is powerful and deep, framed by ripe tannins and a complex finish. Kudos to Paul-Vincent Avril and his team for crafting this ravishing beauty.Nicolas Greinacher1st June 2023
