Run by successive generations of the Avril family, Clos des Papes has a long and illustrious history of producing exceptional wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with winemaking records dating back to the 17th century. Paul Avril, the grandfather of the current owner, played a key role in establishing the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC in 1936, helping to define the appellation’s strict regulations.

Since 2009, Paul-Vincent Avril has led the estate, continuing its commitment to quality while maintaining a traditional approach. Clos des Papes produces just two wines one red and one white, both of which are limited in quantity and consistently in high demand.

“(65% grenache, 20% mourvedre, 10% syrah and the rest "the others") Deep red. Explosively perfumed nose offers a profound bouquet of red and dark berries, licorice, incense and musky underbrush. Broad, palate-staining raspberry and blackcurrant flavors are enveloped in velvety tannins, with suave anise and Asian spices adding complexity. A huge but balanced-even graceful-wine, with a finish that refuses to let go of the palate. This remarkable young Chateauneuf has the sheer sex appeal to enjoy young but also possesses superb cellaring potential. I’d hold mine.” Josh Raynolds, Jan 2008, Vinous

The 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape evokes a savory aromatic profile that’s defined by earthy scents, tobacco, cured meat, dried blackberry, crushed rocks and leather. Fleshy and forward, the 2005 shows much more evolution than the 2007 does on this encounter. Fine-grained and perfectly integrated tannins structure this outstanding Clos des Papes, comfortably placing it among the wines of the vintage.Nicolas Greinacher13th June 2024
