The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Clos des Papes 1990, crafted by the storied Avril family, exemplifies a traditional approach to winemaking. This vintage features a blend primarily comprising Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, sourced from diverse terroirs across 24 distinct parcels. The grapes, cultivated from varying soils of pebbles, clay, and limestone, are meticulously hand-harvested. The winemaking process involves 100% destemming, traditional fermentation and an ageing period of around 18 to 24 months in large, neutral foudres, ensuring a focus on fruit character. This wine reflects the complexity and longevity expected from this esteemed producer.

From a fabulous vintage, the 1990 is one of the greatest offerings from Clos des Papes. This was the last vintage vinified with 100% stems, and the result is a full-bodied, opulent, sweet, multidimensional, expansive Chateauneuf du Pape. It has hit its plateau of maturity, where it should rest for 10-15 years. Terrific! - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
