Châteauneuf du Pape Beaucastel Magnum 1998 is a red wine from the Southern Rhône, crafted by Château de Beaucastel, a revered estate known for its adherence to tradition and organic farming practices. This blend incorporates all 13 permitted grape varieties, with a significant proportion of Mourvèdre providing structural depth. The estate employs a unique Flash Release heating method during vinification, leading to concentrated flavours reaching 14.5% alcohol. The 1998 vintage is distinguished for its power and complexity, with a profile that encompasses dark fruit, leather, and garrigue. The magnum format enhances its ageing potential, resulting in fully integrated tannins and enduring freshness.

Saturated ruby-red. Superripe but reticent, grenache-dominated aromas of roasted plum, cherry jam, tar and humus. Fat, lush and stuffed with fruit; almost heavy today compared to the '99. But this is utterly silky and its firm underlying structure is buried by fruit and baby fat. Intriguing meat and licorice notes. A wine of superb finesse and superfine tannins.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2001
