Domaine Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chevenottes 2018 is a medium-bodied Burgundy white wine from the Premier Cru climat of Les Chevenottes in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation of the Côte de Beaune. This historic domaine was founded in 1809 by Auguste Moreau but it wasn`t until 1977 that its reputation was cemented under the leadership of Bernard Moreau (who, improbably, assumed that role at the tender age of 14). Bernard`s sons, Alex and Benoît, came onboard in the 1990s, and Alex is now in charge of winemaking and vineyard operations. Guided by organic farming in the vineyard and low-intervention principles in the cellar, Alex Moreau crafts barrel-aged Chardonnays of real distinction. "The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chevenottes 1er Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet of yellow plum, linseed and citrus lemon scents complemented by hints of pressed flowers; a suggestion of orange rind appears with aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine line of acidity, and quite spicy and energetic, revealing touches of pepper and even a dab of curry powder toward the long, complex finish. Another great success for Alex Moreau." Vinous, 2020

Next to and just below Les Vergers but completely different. The first picked (30 August in 2018) because the first to ripen. Old vines and small berries. Sugars can rise really quickly and so he usually starts the harvest here. Tank sample, still on lees. The impression of burnished gold – yellow plums, really ripe aromas – seems more mature than 2018. Broad, spicy and open. Crispness and breadth are contrasted rather than integrated. Needs time. Just a baby. Lots of spice on the finish. (JH) — Julia Harding, 21st November 2019
