Chartogne-Taillet Les Couarres 2020 is a single-vineyard Champagne from the esteemed Chartogne-Taillet estate in the village of Merfy. This cuvée derives from the Les Couarres plot, characterised by its sandy and clay-rich soils, fostering distinct terroir expression. The 2020 vintage, marked by warm weather, results in fruit-forward wines with palpable depth. Featuring a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this release is vinified partially in oak, contributing to a layered structure. Expect a harmonious interplay of ripe citrus, nuanced oxidative hints and mineral undertones, leading to a precise and refreshing finish.

Issuing from the single-vineyard site of Les Couarres in Merfy, with sandy and clay-rich soils over limestone, this Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend tends to be one of the most expressive wines in its youth. Yields from this plot of vines are often the most generous and are usually controlled by extensive de-budding. In the cellar, Les Couarres is more prone to oxidation than his other wines, so barrels are regularly topped up (in contrast to Les Barres) to limit oxygen exposure. Disgorged in October 2024 with 2.5 grams per liter dosage, Chartogne’s 2020 Les Couarres derives exclusively from the 2020 vintage. It bursts from the glass with scents of pear, peach, almonds and spices. On the palate it is medium-bodied, textural and concentrated, though it remains bright and precise thanks to a strong vein of acidity, which distinguishes this rendition from the more gourmand and richer 2018 vintage expression. - Kristaps Karklins

The 2020 Extra-Brut Les Couarres is redolent of dried citrus peel, chamomile, tangerine oil, spice and crushed rocks. Brisk acids and bracing mineral notes drive through the mid-palate and finish. The blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir works so well. This is another wine in the range that needs time. A high percentage of clay yields a Champagne with soft contours. Dosage is 2.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: October 2024. Antonio Galloni8th April 2025
