Michel Magnien Charmes-Chambertin 2009 is a full-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Grand Cru climat of Charmes-Chambertin in the Gevrey-Chambertin commune of the Côte de Nuits. Domaine Michel Magnien is a highly regarded biodynamic wine producer based in Morey-Saint-Denis. The estate is currently managed by Frédéric Magnien, who also produces an eponymous range of wines made from fruit purchased from local growers. This particular release comes from Charmes-Chambertin, which was classified as a Grand Cru site in 1937. The vineyard is said to have the oldest vines in the commune, planted in 1881. "This is really quite pretty with ripe but not roasted red berry fruit, underbrush, game and red currant aromas. There is reasonably good density to the delicious and solidly complex medium-bodied flavours that exhibit a trace of minerality on the attractively persistent and palate coating finish. The supporting tannins are both phenolically mature as well as well-integrated which allows it to be accessible yet make no mistake, this should age well if desired. In sum, this offers fine if not truly exceptional quality." Burghound, 2014

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin (from vines in Mazoyères) is a big, rich wine. This is a relatively open grand cru with plenty of fruit and an expansive, plus personality. The warmth of the vintage comes through in the jammy, sweet fruit. Overall, this is a pretty simple wine in its category. - Antonio Galloni
