Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded in 1999 by the inimitable Jean-Claude Basset. With holdings in some of the most prestigious appellations of Burgundy, viticulture and winemaking is meticulous and is both organic and biodynamic. The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Les Mazoyeres was produced from a 0.74ha parcel of vines planted in 1902 and spent 14 months in French oak, of which 43% was new. This is once again a superb effort and should drink beautifully from 2022 until 2045.

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Les Mazoyères Grand Cru feels a little loose-knit on the nose with strawberry preserve, raspberry and pot pourri aromas. Pretty, but needs more focus. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannins. There is a firm backbone to this Mazoyères. It feels curt and rather blunt on the finish that shows evidence of whole bunch. Hopefully it will flesh out with bottle age. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin1st October 2019

Located between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune in Prémeaux, Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded by Jean-Claude Boisset in 1999. The name was inspired by domaine’s significant vineyard holdings in the village of Vougeot, which is also Boisset’s home.

One of Burgundy’s leading domaines, Vougeraie owns about 40ha of vineyard in more than 30 different appellations of Burgundy, including the Grands Crus of Clos Vougeot, Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, Charmes Chambertin, Mazoyères, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Charlemagne. The domaine vineyards have been managed biodynamically since 2001. The highest possible production values and strictest levels of quality control, including a state-of-the-art sorting table, are maintained for the domaine’s entire range of wines. The domaine’s general manager, Sylvie Poillot, has managed the winemaking team since Pierre Vincent departed for Domaine Leflaive.
