Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded in 1999 by Jean-Charles Boisset, the flamboyant wine entrepreneur who currently operates 28 wineries in California, France and Canada. With holdings in some of the most prestigious appellations of Burgundy, viticulture and winemaking is meticulous and is both organic and biodynamic. This is the domaine’s 2002 Charmes-Chambertin Les Mazoyères, which was produced from a 0.74ha parcel of vines planted in 1902. It’s a rich and meaty expression, with a core of dark sweet fruit and firm tannic backbone.

Good medium red; not too bright. Some leathery funk to the aromas of mocha and milk chocolate. Quite sweet, ripe and high-toned but with surprising acidity keeping the wine from cloying. Still, the flavors run more to leather and torrefaction than to fresh fruit. Cleaner on the finish than on the nose but still in a rather exotic, earthy style. The incisor-saturating tannins are less dry than those of the Corton Clos du Roi. Stephen Tanzer1st February 2016

Located between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune in Prémeaux, Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded by Jean-Claude Boisset in 1999. The name was inspired by domaine’s significant vineyard holdings in the village of Vougeot, which is also Boisset’s home.

One of Burgundy’s leading domaines, Vougeraie owns about 40ha of vineyard in more than 30 different appellations of Burgundy, including the Grands Crus of Clos Vougeot, Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, Charmes Chambertin, Mazoyères, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Charlemagne. The domaine vineyards have been managed biodynamically since 2001. The highest possible production values and strictest levels of quality control, including a state-of-the-art sorting table, are maintained for the domaine’s entire range of wines. The domaine’s general manager, Sylvie Poillot, has managed the winemaking team since Pierre Vincent departed for Domaine Leflaive.
