Dominus 1999 is a distinctive Californian red wine crafted by Dominus Estate, a winery founded by renowned Bordeaux winemaker Christian Moueix. This vintage comprises 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc and 19% Petit Verdot, aged for 16 months in French oak, of which 35% is new. The wine reveals aromas of dark fruit, cedar and hints of graphite. With its structured tannins and balanced acidity, it presents an age-worthy profile that invites careful consideration over the next decade or more.

the 2019 Grand Reserve is worth the modest upgrade from Chapel Down`s entry-level Brut, although the whole entry and mid-range has seen notable improvement in the last two years. There are some generous, expressive aromatics of buttery apple tart, sweet strawberry and nettles meeting a brisk, compact palate showing a touch of citric bitterness. It is attractive and balanced.

55% Chardonnay, 34% Pinot Noir and 11% Pinot Meunier from vineyards in Kent, Sussex and Essex on varied soils including chalk, clay and loam. 2019 was a cool year. The grapes were fermented separately before being blended, after which the wine went through full malolactic conversion. A portion of the wine was from reserves which had been stored in barrel and tank to add complexity and depth to the palate. Maturation on fine lees in tank for six months before bottling and a minimum of three years further ageing on lees in bottle. Winemaker Josh Donaghay-Spire. TA 7.9 g/l, pH 3.07, RS 7 g/l. Bottle weight 835 g. Natural cork. Available in up to 100 shops.
Full-bodied (for English sparkling) with weight on the palate, a deeper colour than many. Complexity on the palate, autolytic character and typical English acidity underneath to keep everything on track. Not cheap but there is a lot to like here. (AWH)
