The Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras Georges Roumier 2015 is a Premier Cru red Burgundy crafted exclusively from Pinot Noir sourced from a distinctive parcel of 0.24 hectares within the Les Cras vineyard. This site, situated below the esteemed Musigny Grand Cru, is known for its shallow limestone soils that foster a specific mineral character in the wine. The wine typically ages in oak barrels for 15-18 months, with a moderate new oak proportion. This vintage may exhibit defined red fruit notes, a silky mouthfeel, and a structure conducive to ageing.

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a tight, compact bouquet with some oak that needs to be fully subsumed, but there is primal, untamed intensity here. The palate is quite muscular on the entry, almost equidistant in style between Chambolle and Morey, and delivers plenty of substance and grip toward the defined finish. This is a bit of a brute at the moment, but I think it will pull through with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
