Sylvain Cathiard Chambolle-Musigny Les Clos de L’Orme 2005 is a powerful village wine from a vintage that favoured structure and concentration. Located just below the Premier Cru belt this vineyard produced grapes with thick skins in 2005 resulting in a wine with significant grip and a deep core of black fruit. Cathiard’s signature style of precise oak integration is evident here providing a spicy framework that has finally begun to soften. It is a masculine version of Chambolle that prioritizes intensity and longevity over the usual delicate lace-like character of the commune.

Cathiard’s 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Clos de l’Orme was in half new wood, but came out of barrel and into tank after one year. Boasting bright, fresh, ripe red raspberry aromas, this comes onto the palate with surprising creaminess, with salted meat stock underpinnings to its persistently bright, infectiously juicy, lightly caramel-tinged fruit. Such a tender, delicate, refined Pinot is what Burgundians would traditionally call “tres Chambolle.” It should make ravishing drinking anytime over the next several years. Good bright red. Pure aromas of raspberry and smoke. Soft and lush, with moderately deep flavors of raspberry and flowers. Finishes with dusty, slightly dry tannins. Cathiard had already moved this cuvee into stainless steel tank in November to preserve the fruit.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2007

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

This small, family run domaine was first established in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy by Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather. Since 2011, following the retirement of Sylvain, the domaine has been run by Sylvain's son, Sébastien Cathiard. Famed for the superb quality Pinot Noir it produces, the domaine has vineyard holdings across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, in addition to tiny holdings in Clos Vougeot and Romanée-St-Vivant.

In the words of esteemed critic, Neal Martin, "“Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard’s wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.”
