The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny from Domaine Georges Roumier is a stunning expression of this revered appellation, crafted by one of Burgundy’s most prestigious producers. Founded in 1924 and now led by Christophe Roumier, the domaine is renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, low-intervention winemaking, and ability to capture the essence of each terroir.
The 2017 vintage, offering purity and finesse, delivers a fragrant bouquet of red berries, crushed roses, and subtle spice. The palate is refined yet vibrant, with silky tannins, bright acidity, and a beautifully layered texture. A fine mineral core underscores its elegance, leading to a long, graceful finish. This is a benchmark Chambolle-Musigny, already charming but with the depth to develop further in the cellar.
The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village had been racked three weeks earlier. I tasted from a used barrel, but the final blend will include 20% new wood. The perfumed nose, mainly of black fruit here, reveals a touch of pressed iris that is nicely defined. The palate is replete with crunchy black fruit and a hint of cassis. A Icon of Fine Burgundy
One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.
If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
