For four generations, the Rousseau family has worked tirelessly and passionately on some of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. The Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin originally belonged to the monks of the Bèze Abbey, who were given the land by the then Duke of Lower Burgundy in the year 630. They cleared the land and planted the first vines of what was to become the Clos de Bèze appellation. Revealing all the elegance and finesse of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, the wine is complex with deep colour and a long, smooth finish. The rich aromas are dominated by red berries and oriental spices. Here is the 2009 vintage in luxurious magnum format.

Good deep red. Darker and more restrained on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jacques, offering sour cherry, menthol, licorice and a peppery nuance. Rich, thick and powerful but youthfully brooding, with dark fruit, licorice and mineral flavors showing superb definition. Wonderfully deep, sappy, soil-inflected wine with a firm tannic spine and an expanding, energetic finish. Today I find this harder to taste than the Chambertin, which is frequently the wine that's cooler and more aristocratic in the early going.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2012
