The Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2022 is a rich, full-bodied red wine from Mendoza, Argentina, crafted entirely from Malbec grapes. The fruit comes from a blend of the Catena family’s historic vineyards, specifically the high-altitude Nicasia and Angélica plots, which feature pre-phylloxera massale selection cuttings. The wine undergoes extensive cold maceration and fermentation, followed by ageing for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels. This process results in an expressive and concentrated profile, revealing notes of violets, plums, blueberries, and notes of vanilla and spice from the oak.

A blend of two origins—the warmer La Consulta and the cooler Paraje Altamira —the 2022 Malbec Argentino spent up to 12 months in French oak barrels. Purplish in hue, it reveals aromas of violets, plum and ripe dark fruit, alongside subtle smoky nuances. The oak is finely integrated, lending a creamy texture, plush tannins and a soft structure. This wine masterfully balances two distinct profiles — currently youthful yet velvety. It reinterprets the classic Mendoza Malbec style of the early 2000s.Joaquin Hidalgo1st November 2024

Pioneers of Fine Winemaking in Argentina

Over more than a century, the Catenas have evolved into the pre-eminent winemaking family in Argentina. The family’s history in wine goes back to 1902 when Nicola Catena purchased his first Mendoza vineyard. Much more recently, in 1997, his grandson, Nicolás Zapata pioneered the idea of fine wine from Argentina. Inspired by Bordeaux and Napa, he was the first person to ally Old World winemaking sensibilities to the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza.

Bodega Catena Zapata is now managed by (Dr) Laura Catena, who continues to uphold the the family’s standard of excellence, harnessing the high-altitude terroir of the Andes through precision viticulture and a highly granular cellar regime to produce one of the finest wine portfolios in Argentina.

The flagship wine of the Catena portfolio is the Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée in which ungrafted Malbec is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon from ‘grand cru’ multiple plots, all processed via 200 micro-vinifications which are then blended together and matured for 24 months in French oak, with a further two years in bottle before release.
