From the Adrianna Vineyard at 1,450 metres in Mendoza, Argentina, this 2014 Chardonnay showcases a unique 2.2-hectare parcel known as White Bones. The vineyard`s soil, rich in calcareous deposits and fossilised remains, imparts distinct mineral qualities. Fermented to 12.5% alcohol, this wine underwent maturation in French oak, with a segment influenced by flor-like yeast. The result is a profile that includes lemon oil, jasmine, and a salty minerality. The cool growing conditions of 2014 contributed to its vibrant acidity and crystalline fruit character. This offering exemplifies the Catena family’s commitment to crafting terroir-driven wines, echoing the precision found in Burgundy.

Bright yellow. Much more smoky and reduced on the nose than the White Stones, hinting at a grassy quality. Conveys an impression of stronger acidity and less sweetness than the White Stones yet this is creamier in the mid-palate in spite of its terrific cut and texture. The mineral and grassy flavors are accented by an element of orange peel on the back end. Perhaps less sexy today than the White Stones but this wine needs time to express itself and is likely to be long-lived by the standards of Argentine Chardonnay. Extended aeration brought a distinctly minty quality throughout. These vines are planted on crumbly calcaire while the White Stones is on calcaire over stone.Stephen Tanzer1st July 2017

Adrianna Vineyard is at almost 1,400 m in Gualtallary and this wine comes from select rows within block 1 of the vineyard. The name refers to the soil underneath these rows, which is layered with calcareous deposits and limestone as well as fossilised animal bones – remnants of a river that used to pass through the region. Day–night temperature variation in summer can be as much as 15-20 ºC. Fermented in French oak barrels with ambient yeasts. Aged 12-16 months in used French oak. Partial malo. Unfined and unfiltered. TA 8.7 g/l, pH 3.1. Pale gold. Unexpected minty aroma at first (lemon balm?), then more herbal with a touch of cedar. On the palate, terrific freshness, cool and lightly minty too but also showing a stony mineral character. Highly distinctive.. Elegant, almost light weight in the mouth and a long, precise citrus finish. Of the two wines – White Bones and White Stones – this was the one I came back to most often. (JH)

Pioneers of Fine Winemaking in Argentina

Over more than a century, the Catenas have evolved into the pre-eminent winemaking family in Argentina. The family’s history in wine goes back to 1902 when Nicola Catena purchased his first Mendoza vineyard. Much more recently, in 1997, his grandson, Nicolás Zapata pioneered the idea of fine wine from Argentina. Inspired by Bordeaux and Napa, he was the first person to ally Old World winemaking sensibilities to the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza.

Bodega Catena Zapata is now managed by (Dr) Laura Catena, who continues to uphold the the family’s standard of excellence, harnessing the high-altitude terroir of the Andes through precision viticulture and a highly granular cellar regime to produce one of the finest wine portfolios in Argentina.

The flagship wine of the Catena portfolio is the Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée in which ungrafted Malbec is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon from ‘grand cru’ multiple plots, all processed via 200 micro-vinifications which are then blended together and matured for 24 months in French oak, with a further two years in bottle before release.
