Catena Alta Malbec 2014 is a flagship red wine from Bodega Catena Zapata in Mendoza, Argentina. This vintage is a complex assemblage of grapes sourced from five historic estate vineyards located at high altitudes including Angélica, La Pirámide and Adrianna. Winemaker Alejandro Vigil utilised wild yeast fermentation followed by 18 months of maturation in French oak to craft an elegant profile of cassis, mocha and lavender. It offers concentrated flavours of black cherry and liquorice supported by a firm mineral backbone and silky tannins.
91 Vinous
(aged in 30% new oak, the rest concrete tanks): Deep ruby-red. Pungent scents of blackberry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate are complemented by a candied berry note. Fine-grained and firm, with nicely integrated acidity energizes the wine`s middle palate. This classy Malbec`s intense dark fruit flavors are deep and rich but not at all ponderous. Dusty tannins spread out to saturate the palate on the persistent, gripping finish. Incidentally, winemaker Alejandro Vigil told me that he prefers Malbec over Cabernet Sauvignon in 2014 but Cabernet in the more Bordelais 2015 vintage.Stephen Tanzer1st July 2017

Pioneers of Fine Winemaking in Argentina

Over more than a century, the Catenas have evolved into the pre-eminent winemaking family in Argentina. The family’s history in wine goes back to 1902 when Nicola Catena purchased his first Mendoza vineyard. Much more recently, in 1997, his grandson, Nicolás Zapata pioneered the idea of fine wine from Argentina. Inspired by Bordeaux and Napa, he was the first person to ally Old World winemaking sensibilities to the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza.

Bodega Catena Zapata is now managed by (Dr) Laura Catena, who continues to uphold the the family’s standard of excellence, harnessing the high-altitude terroir of the Andes through precision viticulture and a highly granular cellar regime to produce one of the finest wine portfolios in Argentina.

The flagship wine of the Catena portfolio is the Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée in which ungrafted Malbec is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon from ‘grand cru’ multiple plots, all processed via 200 micro-vinifications which are then blended together and matured for 24 months in French oak, with a further two years in bottle before release.
