Dominio del Aguila is a small, family run winery producing incredibly high quality and thoroughly modern wines in the village of La Aguilera in the Ribera del Duero. Though only established in 2010, winemaker Jorge Monzon is one of the most exciting prospects in the region having honed his skills at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia.

Canta la Perdiz is an incredibly limited release of a Tempranillo-dominant field blend from one of the oldest vineyards in the village. The 2016 is an extraordinary wine of remarkable aromatic complexity and depth. Full-bodied and sinewy yet beguilingly elegant, it unfurls in the glass to reveal wonderful layers of mulberry, blackberry, nutmeg, anise, Mediterranean herbs and earth.

Forward-Looking Ribera

In contrast with the high-alcohol, super-concentrated wines with which Ribera is typically associated, Aguila prizes elegance and restraint in its wines – all made made from carefully selected old-vine plots of Tempranillo, Blanca del País, Bobal, Garnacha, Albillo and Tempranillo Gris. All are farmed organically or biodynamically.

The domaine’s reserva, made from a plot of vines more than 100 years old and aged for 35 months in old French oak, is a masterpiece in concentration with restraint. Also look out for the clarete – an extraordinary barrel-aged rosé-coloured wine made with co-fermented white and red grapes. This traditional style of wine in northern Spain had been largely forgotten in Ribera del Duero until Jorge campaigned to have it recognised in the appellation.
