Miani Calvari 2004 is a full-bodied red wine produced from Refosco grapes in the Friuli region of northern Italy. Miani’s Enzo Pontoni is one of Italy’s premier cult winemakers. Working with just 13 hectares in the Colli Orientali DOC yields are miniscule and total annual production is only 9000 bottles. His wines are known for their fruit intensity and textural richness but are always impeccably balanced and surprisingly long-lived. This mature 100% Refosco is concentrated and silky with notes of sweet black cherry and blackberry compote combined with balsamic herbs, liquorice and oak spice.

Vinous
But the real star of the night is the unbelievable 2004 Refosco Calvari, a true vinous work of art. I have never tasted a better Refosco wine in my life, and this specific bottle lacks some of the rustic notes I have found in some other 2004 Calvari wines; it magically combines power and grace, suave tannins and depth of red, blue and black fruit flavors complicated by notes of tobacco, mineral and flowers, and nearly endless length to create a seamless, multilayered drinking experience unlike any I have yet encountered in this year’s collection of red wines.
