The Ca del Merlo Rosso Giuseppe Quintarelli 2007 is a highly esteemed red wine from the Veneto region of Italy,The 2007 blend is composed of 55% Corvina and Corvinone, 30% Rondinella and 15% of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Croatina and Sangiovese, all sourced from a single vineyard on limestone and basalt soils. The winemaking involves a distinctive process where approximately 50% of the grapes are pressed immediately after harvest, while the other 50% undergo a brief drying period (appassimento) for about two months. After primary fermentation with indigenous yeasts, a portion of the wine undergoes a second fermentation (ripasso) on the lees of the Amarone, adding depth and complexity. The wine then undergoes an exceptionally long aging period of approximately seven years in large Slavonian oak barrels before bottling. The 2007 Ca del Merlo is known for its dense ruby color, evolving aromas of sweet cherry, pomegranate, balsamic and subtle notes of tobacco and earth, offering a full-bodied yet remarkably balanced palate with high acidity, fine tannins and a very long, complex finish.

Quintarelli Giuseppe

The Godfather of Veneto

The Quintarelli estate in the northern Veronese village of Negrar dates back to 1924 and was founded by Bepe’s father, Silvio. Bepe himself took over in the 1950s, orchestrating a quality revolution through his meticulous work in the vineyard and his uncompromising practices in the cellar. The result was wines of such hedonistic deliciousness that they became some of the most sought-after in Italy; those made before Bepe’s death in 2012 especially so.

At the still family-run estate, Bepe’s legacy continues through his daughter, Fiorenza, along with her husband, Giampaolo, and their children. The core range of wines are those made in the appassimiento style (ie, with partially sun-dried grapes): the Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone, Rosso del Bepi (essentially an Amarone, but released instead of the Amarone in ‘lesser’ vintages) and Recioto. The Amarone, only released in exceptional years, is matured for fully seven years in old Slavonian oak before release. An Amarone Riserva sees 10 years.
