The Biondi-Santi vineyard has 32 hectares of Sangiovese, of which 5 hectares were planted between 1930-1972. The vineyards are divided on five vineyard plots, located around the town of Montalcino. Thanks to the high altitude of these vineyards, Biondi-Santi managed to produce a remarkable Riserva in the rather hot 2007 vintage. The wine opens with aromas of forest floor and dried rose petals, and the palate showcases concentrated cherries and cinnamon-spiced flavours, followed by refreshing tannins. The wine is drinking well now through 2037.

The estate's flagship Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is terrific in 2007. Rose petals, red cherries, flowers and spices are all layered together. This isn't a huge wine, but rather a Brunello of elegance, refinement and pure finesse. The 2007 is a total infant of a wine, but one that holds quite a bit of promise for the future. There is plenty of vintage 2007 radiance, but it would be a shame to open a bottle before its tenth birthday, and that is likely to be on the optimistic side. Antonio Galloni1st September 2013

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
