Renowned for its extraordinary longevity, here is a beautiful 2004 Riserva from the historical Biondi-Santi made exclusively from grapes from the oldest vines (over 25 years old). Aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 3 years followed by long period of bottle-aging in the quiet and darkness of “La Storica”, the bottle library at Tenuta Greppo. This splendid Brunello boasts a red-fruited profile, with floral and mineral complexity.

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is just beginning to open up. The flavors remain bright, focused and vibrant, but the tannins are quite silky, which gives the wines an unusual level of accessibility. Still, the 2004 is a real baby. Readers who can wait will be rewarded with a magnificent Brunello. The 2004 has the freshness, acidity and overall structure to age effortlessly for decades. Tasted next to the Annata, the Riserva is darker, richer and more powerful. In time, though, I am not sure it will be meaningfully better or more complex.Antonio Galloni1st October 2016

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
