Located within the Margaux appellation, Château Brane-Cantenac has a long history dating back to the 18th century. The 2009 vintage is considered exceptional and highly regarded in Bordeaux. The growing season was marked by favourable weather conditions, resulting in wines with excellent ripeness, concentration, and overall quality. While enjoyable now, it has the potential to continue evolving and improving with proper cellaring, allowing it to reveal additional complexity and depth over time.

Exceptional weather, and this is showcasing all the charms of the vintage. Firm and vibrant dark ruby in colour, so much depth to the berry fruit, intact, juicy, laced with tobacco, cocoa bean, fragrant rose petal. A total standout, easy to love, one to track down, confirms its success in my recent 2009/2010 retrospective. Harvest September 22 to October 9, 48.4hm/h yield, 70% new French oak barrels, 3.72ph. The 2009 Brane-Cantenac has a wonderful bouquet, the best since the 2005. With copious brambly red berry fruit, cedar and mint—yes, very similar to previous bottles—there is simply more energy and focus from the benevolent growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and perfectly judged acidity, a little spicier than I recall with harmony and grip towards the finish. Time is just beginning to mellow the finish and shave the edges of this superb Brane-Cantenac that continues to dole out so much pleasure. Delicious! Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château in September 2025. Neal Martin11th September 2025

A Distinguished Second Growth

Formerly owned by the great figures of Bordeaux wine, Lucien Lurton, Château Brane-Cantenac is a highly respected Second Growth estate in Margaux. The estate has been owned and run by Lucien’s son, Henri, since 1992. Although perceived to have gone through a lull during the 1970s and 1980s, historically, Brane-Cantenac was always regarded as the a ‘Super Second’. This reputation has only been enhanced by Henri Lurton, through the implementation of better vineyard management techniques (the entire 75ha has been certified organic since 2016) and investment in cutting-edge cellar technology (for example, optical sorting machines).

The estate grows mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (slightly more Cabernet) along with a small amount of Cabernet Franc and Carmenere. The Grand Vin of Château Brane-Cantenac is noted for its ripe tannins, excellent fruit concentration and structure, and perfumed delicacy – all characteristics of the finest wines of Margaux.
