Based in Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Robert Groffier Père & Fils has a long history dating back to the early 20th century. The Domaine has a diverse portfolio of vineyards, including Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites, spread across several appellations such as Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Gevrey-Chambertin. Their Bonnes Mares 2008 is a wine of great distinction. It showcases the essence of this Grand Cru, known for its complexity, power, and finesse. 2008 was a relatively cool vintage, resulting in wines that exhibit freshness, purity of fruit, and good acidity.

The Groffier 2008 Bonnes Mares delivers a savage and site-typical blast of berry concentrate, horehound, smoked meat, juniper, and a whiff of pitch. Sweetly ripe red raspberry and strawberry tinged with citrus oil and herbs on a silken and juicily bright palate convey an almost white wine-like sense of enervation, and only in the gripping, attractively bitter-tart finish does one become aware of this Pinot’s abundant, fine tannins. This seems to have energy to burn and I wouldn’t hesitate to plan on 6-8 years of watchful cellaring. - David Schildknecht

The 2008 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a wine that would have contained around 60% whole bunch, Nicolas Groffier remembering the yields were down in the 20hl/ha because of the small berries. It has a leafy, herbaceous nose whereby I feel that the stems are not fully entwined with the fruit as they seem to do these days. The terroir is therefore in the background. The palate is nicely balanced, again, leafy with austere tannins and slightly hard finish. It just lacks the charm that Groffier's wines have in spades nowadays, and I find this a bit hard going.
