The domaine founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, and now run by grandson, Christophe, is one of the most revered in Burgundy. The 2016 Bonnes-Mares is a masterclass in precision and terroir expression with its exquisite delivery of blackberry, forest floor, smoke and spice. This is a muscular vintage and will probably require a decade of age to reach its drinking window.

The 2016 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is showing more oak on the nose compared to Bruno Clair’s Bonnes-Mares tasted alongside, although there is clearly sufficient fruit behind to support it: blackberry, blueberry and a touch of boysenberry. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with black tea and a touch of iodine, then a strong marine influence develops towards the finish. My concern is that the wood tannins threaten to dominate but thankfully with aeration this settles down nicely and I suspect with time it would meliorate further. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.Neal Martin1st October 2019

'Terres rouges' is very close to the northern limit, with Morey. Pruning identical. ‘Terres blanches’ is above the path that dissects Bonnes Mares. Roumier has three parcels from far north to far south. In 2016 he was able to include the fruit from an extra ha of land owned by Ficofi – planted in 1995, in a good state and a little more vigorous than this – in the terres blanches. Now they have six different parcels and only one was badly frozen. 28 hl/ha average. So normal quantity thanks to extra vines. 65% whole bunch. Less new oak than usual: 25%. Dark crimson. Juicy and alluring on the nose. And then wonderfully rich and exciting on the palate. Great intensity and majesty. Woo hoo! Long and gorgeous. (JR)Jancis Robinson1st December 2017

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
