From the esteemed Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, this wine is crafted by Christophe Roumier, a prominent figure in Burgundy`s wine landscape. The 2012 vintage is characterised by a low yield, which concentrated the flavours of Pinot Noir, achieving an alcohol level of 13.5%. This wine reflects the duality of the vineyard`s clay soils, incorporating both red and white clay components. It underwent maturation in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, contributing a subtle complexity to its profile. Expect aromas of wild strawberries, violets, and peonies, underpinned by an earthy mineral quality. This bottling exhibits firm tannins and a robust structure, necessitating extended aging to fully express its intricate layers and luxurious mouthfeel.

After the perplexing 2011, the 2012 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru restores order – an exemplary wine. The bouquet is still backward, attesting that this Grand Cru deserves a decade in bottle, yet the oak is beautifully assimilated and the terroir really comes through. The palate is knitted together by filigree tannin that almost disguise the intensity of this wines, but the sustained finish leaves you in no doubt that you are in the presence of one of Christophe Roumier's finest recent vintages. Just be patient. Tasted at dinner in Beaune.Neal Martin1st September 2018

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
