The domaine founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, and now run by grandson, Christophe, has attained a phenomenally high standing within Burgundy. In 1988 two expressions of Roumier Bonnes-Mares were produced, of which 100 cases were made of this “regular” cuvée. It is an outstanding wine with haunting perfume of cherries, dried herbs, liquorice, leather and smoke.

The 1988 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is a wine that I have tasted four times over some 20 years. Now in its third decade, it is clearly at full maturity. It has a beguiling bouquet with impressive detail and focus, those red berried fruits blossoming from the glass, Morello cherries commingling with white-tipped strawberries interlaced with crushed stone. Maybe this bottle has a more floral element? Wilted rose petals in an antique vase. As before, the aromatics intensify with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with more rondeur than I noticed previously, at the expense of the tension that defined two bottles four years ago. Dark berry fruit, suggestions of graphite and a sapid finish urges you back for more. Divine. Tasted at the Roumier 1988 dinner at Noizé.Neal Martin8th November 2022

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
