Based in Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Georges Roumier is a leading Burgundy producer with approximately 12 hectares under vines. The domaine was formed in 1924 by George Roumier who farmed his own vines in Chambolle but also worked as vineyard manager for Comte Georges de Vogüé. Since 1992 the estate has been fully managed by the talented Christophe Roumier, the 3rd generation family winemaker. This release comes from Bonnes-Mares, the prestigious grand cru vineyard where Roumier owns a 1.6-hectare plot. Expect a rich and deep Pinot Noir, featuring notes of dark red fruits, mushrooms, earthy minerality and umami.

The 1985 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was de-stemmed by around 20% and cropped at 25hl/ha. Christophe Roumier mentioned that this has the highest pH level ever. The bouquet is stupendous with vibrant red berry fruit, tomato vine and a very subtle sea spray influence. The clarity is astonishing. The palate is a little denser than in magnum but it exerts a wonderful grip in the mouth. Pure unadulterated red fruit mixed with orange zest and fig, a seam of mineralité that carries all the way through to the finish. It is a beautiful Bonnes-Mares although the magnum version has more precision and detail. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London.

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
