R.D stands for “Recently Disgorged” and was an innovation of Madame Bollinger who wished to release a Champagne that would be released ready to drink and would combine extraordinary freshness with greater aromatic complexity. The 2004 is a blend of 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay from a combination of 88% Grands Crus and 12% Premiers Crus. As is traditional at Bollinger, it is fermented entirely in oak barrels before maturation for nearly 13 years under cork. It is rich, full-bodied and deep, boasting notes of red berries, Mirabelle plum, brioche, crème pâtissière, lightly griddled nuts and chalky minerality. Wonderfully refined and elegant, it glides effortlessly across the tongue and finishes with light mineral accents and subtle oxidative nuttiness.

The 2004 Extra-Brut R.D. is a very pretty, understated Champagne that shows the more nuanced side that is typical of the vintage, while the signature Bollinger richness lies more in the background. That is the same impression I had last year, when I tasted the 2004 from magnum at the maison. Apricot, plum, hazelnut, chamomile, spice and dried flowers all open with a bit of aeration. The R.D. is not an obvious or overt Champagne, but it is quite beautiful. It will be interesting to see if a bit more richness develops post-disgorgement. The 2004 is 66% Pinot Noir and 34% Chardonnay taken from 16 villages, 88% Grand Crus and 12% Premier Crus. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Antonio Galloni1st November 2020

Will be released in March 2018 – embargoed until then. 23 tonnes/ha (16 for Bollinger)!!! The equivalent of 140 hl/ha, over 9.5 g sugar and lots of acid. They even left some grapes on the vine. Year of the return of oïdium. 66% Pinot Noir.Deep straw. Compellingly dense nose, lots of yeasty density. The generous crop seems somehow to have resulted in admirable concentration and an impression of off-dry honey. Fresh and chewy – very Bollinger. Good dry undertow. Lighter than Bollinger RD 2002 at the moment (August 2017) and very refreshing. Dances on the palate. Very fine bead. (JR)

A Classic Grande Marque

Synonymous with sophistication and quality, Champagne Bollinger was awarded the Royal Warrant as Official Purveyor of Champagne to Queen Victoria in 1884. From special cuvées and Rosé Champagnes, to rarely seen vintages, luxurious large formats and Recently Disgorged styles, this is a wonderful House to discover. Bollinger wines even have a close association with James Bond - and rare limited editions have been released in celebration of the films from Moonraker to No Time To Die.

The Bollinger vineyard covers 179 hectares, with 85% of these Grand and Premier Cru. One of the last family-run Champagne houses in the region, Bollinger is located in the village of Aÿ, near Épernay. A number of practices are key to the Bollinger approach: the majority of grapes used in the wines have to come from the Maison's own vineyards; Pinot Noir must play a dominant role in the blend; the role of micro-oxygenation from barrel fermentation; and long periods of bottle aging (two to three times longer than required).
