The 2009 Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc from Joseph Drouhin is a full-bodied Premier Cru from the excellent 2009 vintage. The wine displays aromas of white flowers, peach, citrus, toasted vanilla and developing notes of honey and grilled hazelnut. On the palate, this Chardonnay is textured and round, with a lively freshness and structure that carries yellow stone fruit and lemon zest flavours through a long, harmonious, mineral-laced finish. The Drouhin family is the most significant owner of this historic climat, with their entire domaine holding in the Clos des Mouches vineyard encompassing 14 hectares, roughly half of which is planted to Chardonnay.

The 2009 Beaune Clos des Mouches is quite round and seamless for a young Beaune. Yellow stone fruits and minerals are some of the notes that wrap around the palate in this striking white from Drouhin. I especially like to focus and energy of the finish. Though fabulous today, I am very curious to see where the 2009 might be headed over the coming years. In 2009 the estate picked the fruit from this site in nine separate passes. Anticipated maturity: 2014+.
I tasted the 2009s with Jerome Faure-Brac, Drouhin’s head winemaker. Interestingly, Faure-Brac chose to serve these wines a touch on the warm side, so I could observe their strengths and weaknesses more clearly. It was a high stakes move, especially in a warm vintage. I am not sure I would have had the guts to make that decision, but it speaks of great conviction….and the wines came through beautifully. The 2009 harvest began on September 21st, quite late for the year. New oak levels were down sharply, malos were blocked on a number of wines and the estate did no batonnage. The wines were racked once prior to being bottled.

90 Vinous
Bright medium yellow. Alluring, very expressive scents of stone fruits, musky iodiney minerality, grilled nuts, butter and white truffle. Fat, silky and ripe, displaying a lovely sweetness as well as an element of salinity to its stone fruit and almond flavors. This round, horizontal, even plump wine can be enjoyed now for its delicious, still-fresh fruit but has the underlying structure to last for up to another decade. The slightly edgy finish shows good grip and a hint of warmth. (50 h/h; 3.3 pH; 3.85 g/l acidity)Stephen Tanzer1st February 2019
