Love this wine, I drink it regularly at home, and it always performs excellently in blind tastings, delivering so much of what we love about Pauillac. Ruby red colour, still vibrant, full of silky black fruits, pencil lead and mint leaf, revs up through the mid palate with layers of bilberry, cassis, slate and crushed rocks. You will get longer-lasting Pauillac 2009s, but this is thoroughly enjoyable and built to share. 55% new oak for ageing, Philippe Casteja owner.Jane Anson10th October 2024

The 2009 Batailley has a generous bouquet with more red fruit than its peers, laced with brown spices and touches of autumn leaves. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly savoury entry, quite forward in style with lower acidity than expected, sage and meat juices towards what feels like a Merlot-driven finish. Drink over the next decade. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019

Chateau Batailley

A Rising Star in Pauillac

The historic Château Batailley is a Fifth Growth estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Situated on a plateau to the west of the First Growth of Mouton Rothschild, Batailley is one of the oldest chateaux in the Bordeaux region, dating from the 15th century.

In the past two decades, there has been a significant upturn in quality of the Château Batailley grand vin – a typical Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine exhibits classic Pauillac character – concentrated flavour, good structure and ripe tannins.

Vinification at Château Batailley is conventional: grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in both steel tanks and barrels, and the wine is matured barriques (about half of them new) for 16-18 months before bottling. Since 2014, Batailley has produced a second wine, Lions de Batailley, using grapes from younger vines on the 55ha estate. This wine is in a comparable style to the grand vin.
