Cappellano Barolo Piè Franco 2013 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard Nebbiolo from the Barolo appellation of Piedmont, northern Italy. The wines of Cappellano are considered to be some of the most uncompromising ‘old-school’ Barolos available in the market. The cult wine Piè Franco is produced from a Nebbiolo parcel planted on its own roots in 1989 in the Gabutti cru of Serralunga d’Alba. An ethereal wine that harks back to what Barolo may have tasted like before the Phylloxera blight struck European vineyards, necessitating the grafting of vines on to resistant American rootstocks.
Vinous
In 2013, the Barolo Piè Franco is decidedly austere and tannic. Readers should be in no rush to open bottles, not that that should be a problem. Time in the glass brings out the alluring aromatics that are such a signature of the Piè Franco. Although closed down and not fully expressive, the 2013 is a Barolo of haunting beauty. Readers lucky enough to own it can look forward to several decades of exceptional drinking.Antonio Galloni1st February 2018
