Barolo Monfortino Giacomo Conterno Magnum 2004 is a significant expression of traditional Barolo winemaking. Sourced from select plots in Montfortino, this vintage showcases the power and complexity typical of the region. With a prolonged ageing process, the wine offers a nuanced profile of dark fruit, earthy undertones, and structured tannins. Giacomo Conterno, established in 1900, is renowned for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship, exemplified by this magnum, which allows for extended maturation and evolution.

In retrospect, I am not quite sure why I placed the 2004 Monfortino in our first flight. It’s a stunning wine, one of the finest made here. I suspect I put the 2004 in this first set of wines to show the contemporary approachability of modern Monfortino. Silky, perfumed and gracious on the palate, the 2004 is every bit as vibrant and complex as it was when I first tasted it. Sublime. Antonio Galloni18th December 2025

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
