Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2001 is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo from the esteemed Bussia cru in Monforte d’Alba. Considered one of the greatest Barolo producers, Aldo Conterno was a pioneer in combining traditional and modern winemaking techniques, a legacy continued by his family after his passing in 2012. The Cicala vineyard is known for its steep slopes and well-draining soils, producing wines with depth, structure, and longevity. The 2001 vintage was exceptional, delivering rich, complex Barolos with fine tannins and great ageing potential. This wine offers aromas of ripe red berries, dried rose petals, liquorice, and forest floor, while the palate is elegant yet powerful, showcasing savoury spice, earthiness, and a refined mineral core that lingers beautifully.

Medium red. Quintessential Barolo perfume: minerals, tobacco, underbrush, tar, licorice, gunflint. Then wonderfully rich and seamless in the mouth, with superb concentration and purity of flavor. Spicy red fruits emerged with aeration. Comes across, atypically, as less clenched in the early going than the Colonnello and strikingly complex from the outset, but this is nonetheless extremely young. Finishes with extremely suave tannins and vibrant lingering fruit. Great wine in the making.Stephen Tanzer1st November 2004

Nr Monforte d’Alba. Quite pale with wide pale rim. Coffee and spiced black cherry, very sweet and ripe on the nose with quite noticeable oak. First sign of undergrowth and truffles, getting stronger with time in the glass. Complex and delicious. Fresh and not overwhelmed by the oak. (JH)
