Barolo Bussia Prunotto 2006, from Monforte d`Alba in Piedmont, Italy, is crafted entirely from Nebbiolo grapes sourced from the Bussia vineyard, known for its amphitheatre shape that enhances ripening conditions. This vintage reflects a cool climate with 14% alcohol, resulting in pronounced tannins. The wine undergoes a 24-month maturation in large Slavonian oak vats, allowing the preservation of its primary characteristics. The bouquet presents dark cherries, liquorice, and dried rose petals. The Antinori family, owners of the winery, adheres to traditional techniques while emphasising the significance of vineyard-specific expression. The density of the fruit provides a mineral-driven finish, indicative of its ageing potential.

Medium red. Reticent aromas of currant, cherry, red rose and tobacco. Richer, bigger and sweeter than the normale but less open initially. Aeration reveals a wine with superb stuffing and depth, and more of all the key components, including sheer material to buffer its tannins. Finishes sweet and long, with wonderfully suave tannins and lingering perfume.Stephen Tanzer1st November 2009
