Serafino Rivella is one of Barbaresco’s smallest traditional producers, farming just two hectares of vines from the family property in the Montestefano cru. The estate was established by Teobaldo Rivella’s father, Serafino, who planted the family vineyards in the early 1960s. Production remains extremely small, at around 12,000 bottles across Barbaresco and Dolcetto in a typical vintage, with Teobaldo and his wife Maria carrying out much of the work themselves.
The estate’s Barbaresco comes entirely from Montestefano, one of the most highly regarded vineyards in the commune of Barbaresco. Its south-facing slopes and limestone and clay soils tend to produce a particularly structured expression of Nebbiolo, and Montestefano is often noted for the power and longevity of its wines. Rivella follows a firmly traditional approach in the cellar, giving the Barbaresco around 30 days of skin contact with submerged-cap maceration, followed by three years of maturation in cask.
The 2016 combines the structure of Montestefano with the perfume and freshness of a particularly successful vintage in the Langhe. Rose petal, dried flowers, cedar, mint and warm spice lead the aromatic profile, with bright Nebbiolo acidity and firm, finely drawn tannins providing definition on the palate.
Antonio Galloni awarded the 2016 95 points, describing it as a classic expression of Barbaresco and highlighting its energy, transparency and aromatic nuance. Galloni has also described Teobaldo Rivella as “one of Barbaresco’s garagistes”, recognising the highly individual, small-scale character of an estate that remains resolutely traditional.
