Banff Tantalus 1975 is a single malt from the defunct Banff distillery, bottled by Duncan Taylor from a single cask as part of the Tantalus range. Matured for over 30 years, it offers a window into a style of Highland whisky that ceased production in 1983. The nose reveals beeswax, polished wood, apricot jam, and nutmeg. On the palate, the whisky is full-bodied, showcasing spiced orange, vanilla, and dried herbs. Extensive maturation has allowed the oak to integrate, resulting in a balanced spirit despite the high age. The finish features a lingering warmth complemented by dark cocoa notes. As a rare single-cask release, it provides an authentic representation of the era’s craftsmanship from an estate that has since been lost to history.

A Silent Still

Finally demolished in the early 1980s, Banff was a distillery that suffered its fair share of bad luck over the 150 years it was operational. In 1877 the distillery burnt to the ground before being swiftly rebuilt by the then owners, the Simpson family. The economic depression of the early 1930 bankrupted the family and they were forced to sell the distillery off to make ends meet. The distillery buildings were heavily damaged by German bombs during the Second World War and suffered another explosive fire in the late 1950s - talk about jinxed!

Bottlings are now incredibly rare and are almost always single cask editions released by independent bottlers such as Signatory or Gordon and MacPhail. Pre-1960, the stills were heated by coal burners and up until the mid 1920s the spirit was triple distilled.
