A Banff 1966 vintage Highland single malt Scotch whisky, which was matured in a refill Sherry butt and bottled in 2015 by Gordon & MacPhail, for their Rare Old series. Sweet Sherry influences the nose, complemented by stewed apples, figs and zesty orange notes. The palate opens to cracked black pepper tingles on the tongue, followed by prunes, grapefruits and red apple flavours. Only 362 bottles were produced.

A Silent Still

Finally demolished in the early 1980s, Banff was a distillery that suffered its fair share of bad luck over the 150 years it was operational. In 1877 the distillery burnt to the ground before being swiftly rebuilt by the then owners, the Simpson family. The economic depression of the early 1930 bankrupted the family and they were forced to sell the distillery off to make ends meet. The distillery buildings were heavily damaged by German bombs during the Second World War and suffered another explosive fire in the late 1950s - talk about jinxed!

Bottlings are now incredibly rare and are almost always single cask editions released by independent bottlers such as Signatory or Gordon and MacPhail. Pre-1960, the stills were heated by coal burners and up until the mid 1920s the spirit was triple distilled.
