Château Ausone sits in the highest possible quality tier in Saint-Emilion - Premier Grand Cru Classé ‘A’. The vineyards are a mixture of sand, clay and limestone and total around 17 acres, split 50/50 with plantings of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Annual production is relatively small, around 2,000 cases only for the Grand Vin.

2000 was a legendary vintage in Bordeaux, with many comparisons made to the much lauded 1990 vintage a decade earlier. Both right and left bank properties produced excellent wines with Ausone being no exception. Robert Parker described Ausone 2000 as “by far the best Cheval Blanc since 1990 and before 2009”.

The 2000 Ausone was tasted on no less than three occasions during March 2015, once with Pauline and Alain Vauthier. It is a great millennial Saint-Émilion with intense blackberry and cassis fruit laced with cedar and violets. Less opulent than it showed in its youth, it is a perfect marriage of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The palate even at 15 years of age is quite backward and you could argue, rather glossy. Yet there is poise here that lingers in the mouth with a brilliant mineral-driven finish. It is an Ausone that will give five or six decades of drinking pleasure but will certainly repay the more patient. Tasted at a private dinner in Bordeaux.Neal Martin1st March 2018

Bright, shiny crimson. Big, full, sweet, New World ripeness. Very, very sweet and plump. Lively. Lots of tannins and acidity. Very, very young. Dies suddenly at the end. Good nose, but disappointing on the palate. Holds together at the finish. Well made, but not very Bordeaux! (JR)

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
