Exalted Chardonnay master, Mark Aubert, wanted the Sugar Shack Vineyard in Rutherford to demonstrate how the stylistic gap between warmer Napa and more elegant Sonoma Chardonnay could be narrowed. In essence he wanted to create Chardonnay that was both bombastic and powerful, yet could be terroir driven and maintained high acidity. Dripping with honeyed tropical fruits, the 2014 is exuberant but tempered by pinpoint acidity and lingers long in the mouth with sensational purity and complexity.

Here in just its third vintage, 2014 Chardonnay Sugar Shack is rich and deeply colored. Dried apricot, hazelnut, spice, chamomile, baked apple tart, candied orange peel and lightly honeyed noted are all signatures of a wine that is peaking. There's still plenty of density, so this may hang on for some time. All of the textural richness and oiliness of Sugar Shack is very much in evidence.Antonio Galloni1st January 2025

Sublime Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

Aubert was founded by Mark and Theresa Aubert in 2000, located on the famous Silverado trail in Calistoga. Before he and his partner opened Aubert, Mark had gained experience at the Peter Michael Winery and Colgin Cellars and also made wine at a 'custom crush' facility in California. Aubert have some proprietary vineyards, around three and half acres in Sonoma, which they bottle under the 'UV' label. The remainder of the fruit is sourced from selected vineyards across Sonoma and Napa.

In the world of wine, Aubert is really a byword for world-class single vineyard or single block Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vineyards they source from represent a mix of terroirs and include some old vines as well as some recent plantings. What remains consistent through all these bottlings is the preservation of fruit character and an extreme obsession with quality.
