The 2011 Araujo Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is a dry white wine from the Eisele Vineyard in Napa Valley, known for its focused, site-specific character. The cooler 2011 vintage provided a longer hang-time, resulting in a Sauvignon Blanc with elevated acidity and tension. This release is less opulent than the 2009, presenting a tauter profile defined by minerality, grapefruit zest, and delicate herbal notes. It is a structured and highly age-worthy example that defies the simple, early-drinking stereotype often associated with Californian Sauvignon Blanc.

Araujo’s 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard is absolutely gorgeous. Succulent yellow orchard fruit, white flowers and freshly cut mint wrap around the palate in a wine that is at once rich yet weightless. Sweet floral notes reappear on the finish, adding lift and freshness. The 2011 is two-thirds Musque Blanc and one-third Sauvignon Blanc, fermented and aged partly in oak new and partly in steel. The blocked malo style is especially appealing here. Anticipated maturity. 2012-2016. This is a gorgeous set of wines from Bart and Daphne Araujo, and their team headed by winemaker Nigel Kinsman and consulting winemaker Francoise Peschon. In particular, the 2010s are knockouts. I won’t be surprised if one day 2010 is considered one of the great all-time vintages at this historic property. (bottled two days before my early March visit): Bright pale yellow. Very ripe, sexy aromas of stone fruits, lime and wild herbs. Lush and rich in the mouth, with impressive palate presence, even a bit of viscosity. Hardly your typical sauvignon blanc. Bone-dry but with superb pineappley fruit sweetness. Finishes with excellent fruity grip. Very pure wine, but I still prefer the 2010 for its salty minerality.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2012
