Home to the Sichel family since 1961, Château Angludet is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc, with a history which goes back to the 12th century. Their wines enjoy a worldwide reputation for their elegance, aromatic finesse and exceptional ageing potential. The 2018 vintage delivered a successful Angludet, with plenty of bright and sappy berries, and a clear sense of uplift through the finish.

Huge concentration, with smoked spice and fresh acidities, majoring on cassis and blueberry fruits. Unfussy and charming, tannins already supple, this is an enjoyable, early drinking Margaux with crushed rosebud notes as it opens. A high proportion of Petit Verdot in this vintage because they lost lost 70% of the crop to mildew, a particular blow after losing everything to frost in 2017 (it was the first serious frost since 1991, so they were really was taken by surprise although have since invested in various counter-measures). It means they produced 30,000 bottes (usually up to 150,000) from a yield of 10hl/h. 100% French oak (as of 2019 they began to add some amphoras into the ageing mix). The 2018 Angludet has a very attractive bouquet of pure blackberry and blueberry fruit, a discreet floral element and glimpses of cassis coming through with aeration. It is delicate but very refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a little pinched on the entry but gradually fanning out toward the finish, which is detailed and full of tension. One of the best vintages of Angludet that I have tasted in recent years. Neal Martin21st March 2021

Offering up aromas of rich blackberry and cassis fruit mingled with notions of smoked meats, cigar wrapper and loamy soil, the 2018 D'Angludet is medium to full-bodied, rich and characterful, with ripe tannins and a fleshy core of fruit. Somewhat wild, meaty aromatics and flavors detract from the purity of an otherwise compelling effort.William Kelley31st October 2022

Biodynamic winemaking in Médoc

Home to the Sichel wine merchant family since 1961, Château Angludet is one of the oldest properties in the Médoc, with a history dating back to the 12th century. Although officially a Cru Bourgeois property, Angludet has made great strides in recent years and nowadays makes wines which are considered to be of Grand Cru Classé quality.

Angludet owns a single 32-hectare vineyard overlooking the Gironde estuary in Margaux, where the gravelly, sandy soils produce wines with particular finesse and elegance. Cabernet Sauvignon is the main grape variety planted, representing 46% of plantings. Merlot (41%) and Petit Verdot (13%) make up the remainder.

Since 1989 the property has been run by Benjamin Sichel, one of whose most important innovations has been the introduction of biodynamic viticulture (the estate has been certified biodynamic since 2022). Combined with Benjamin’s great skill as a winemaker, this has greatly contributed to the vitality and balance of the estate’s wines, which are consistently among Margaux’s finest.
