Almaviva was created in 1996 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild and Concha y Toro with the singular aim of producing Chile’s equivalent to a Bordeaux First Growth. Fruit is sourced from 60 hectares of vines located in the Puente Alto subzone of the Maipo Valley – an area identified as perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon with its stony soils, hot days and cool nights.
The 2000 vintage was widely regarded as very good despite slightly cooler-than-usual conditions. This is a perfect example of Almaviva from when the wine was produced from just two grape varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) and Carmenere (14%).

Cabernet Sauvignon 86%, Carmenère 14%. Dark purplish crimson. Strong attack with a certain delicacy on the nose though powerful sweetness on the palate. Still marked tannins – a youthful, unformed wine. Tannins still quite jagged. Not immediately obvious as a Chilean wine – more of a big, bold Bordeaux blend. (JR)
