David Abreu is a legendary Californian producer of highly distinctive single-vineyard wines in miniscule quantities. The remarkable Thorevilos vineyard sits at 800ft elevation between the St Helena and Howell Mountain AVAs. The 2001 Thorevilos is a distinctly American red wine, crafted from a selection of carefully chosen grapes. The wine showcases a blend that highlights the natural terroir, resulting in a structured profile with notable acidity. Abreu produces wines with minimal intervention, allowing the grapes to express their true character.

The 2001 Thorevilos is inky, deep and explosive to the core. Crème de cassis, lavender, spice, menthol and lavender race across the palate. Still young and quite potent, the 2001 remains a tannic beast. I have a hard time saying a 20 year-old wine needs more time, so let's just say it will benefit from a long decant! Time in the glass brings out some of the sumptuousness that lurks beneath. I remember tasting this wine at age ten. The essence of its personality is very much intact. Antonio Galloni1st April 2023

Terroir Driven Cabernet Sauvignon

David Abreu established his eponymous winery in the 1980s, purchasing the Madrona Ranch and converting it into a mix of farmland and vineyards. The Thorevilos and Capella vineyards were added a few years later and Las Posadas, a Howell Mountain vineyard, was added to the estate's holdings in the year 2000. The result is something quite unique in Napa - a collection of distinct sites all producing world class, terroir-driven Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaker for the last 20 years is former chef turned viticulturist Brad Grimes. Brad keeps the focus of the estate firmly set on the founder's original goal - to emulate the finest wines of Pauillac and Margaux. Based on the long waiting list and never-ended near-perfect critic scores, he's hit a home run in that department.
