Legendary California viticulturalist, David Abreu, produces exceptional single-vineyard wines in tiny quantities. The 1996 Madrona Ranch is almost entirely Cabernet Sauvignon and is an exceptionally concentrated and complex wine. Now with tannins almost fully integrated this delivers wave after joyous wave of delicious black fruit, smoky oak, liquorice and herbs.
93 Vinous
Deep ruby. Wild aromas of blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate, maple syrup, game, cedar and wintermint; initially rather high-pitched but showed a stronger '96-typical torrefaction aspect with aeration. Very deep and layered, but with none of the easy sweetness that characterizes so much Napa cabernet. A rather Old World style of cabernet, with slightly sauvage flavors of dark berries, leather and blood. Finishes subtle, spicy and very long, with substantial but rather suave tannins. Structured to reward time in bottle.Stephen Tanzer1st November 2000

Terroir Driven Cabernet Sauvignon

David Abreu established his eponymous winery in the 1980s, purchasing the Madrona Ranch and converting it into a mix of farmland and vineyards. The Thorevilos and Capella vineyards were added a few years later and Las Posadas, a Howell Mountain vineyard, was added to the estate's holdings in the year 2000. The result is something quite unique in Napa - a collection of distinct sites all producing world class, terroir-driven Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaker for the last 20 years is former chef turned viticulturist Brad Grimes. Brad keeps the focus of the estate firmly set on the founder's original goal - to emulate the finest wines of Pauillac and Margaux. Based on the long waiting list and never-ended near-perfect critic scores, he's hit a home run in that department.
